Estate Cleanout Checklist

A practical order of operations for clearing a family property without redoing work.

Secure documents first

Before anything moves, collect titles, deeds, insurance policies, tax records, photographs and anything with a signature. These surface in odd places: freezers, book jackets, coat pockets.

Sort in one pass per room

Keep, donate, sell, dispose. Sorting room by room prevents the pile-shuffling that makes cleanouts drag for weeks.

Schedule the container after sorting

Ordering a dumpster on day one invites everything into it, including sellable items. Booking after the sort pass typically drops the required size by one step.

Handle special items deliberately

Paint, chemicals, firearms, medications and electronics all have separate disposal paths. Plan a single trip for those rather than discovering them at the end.
