Estimating tonnage

A square of asphalt shingles weighs roughly 250 pounds per layer. A 25-square roof with one layer is about 3 tons; two layers is closer to 6. Wood shake and tile change the math again.

Choose weight rating over volume

Roofing rarely fills a container. A 10 or 15 yard can with a generous tonnage allowance is nearly always the right call for residential tear-offs.

Placement saves hours

Setting the container directly beneath the working eave lets crews throw debris straight in. Every extra 20 feet of carry adds real labor cost.
